Sewer pipe repair in Malibu: repair, reline or replace

A failing sewer pipe in Malibu ends up in one of three places: a short repair, a full relining or a replacement. This page sets out how the choice is made from the camera recording and from the ground the pipe sits in, so the proposal you get reads as a conclusion rather than a sales pitch.

Three outcomes

Every sewer pipe problem in Malibu that reaches a camera resolves into one of three plans. Repair means a single defect is fixed and the rest of the pipe is left alone. Reline means the whole run gets a new wall inside the old one. Replace means the old pipe is retired and a new one takes its path, by bursting or, rarely, by digging. The plan is chosen by three questions: how much of the pipe is damaged, whether the pipe still holds its shape, and what sits on top of it.

How much of the pipe is damaged

A recording that shows one cracked joint under the parkway tree and sound pipe everywhere else is a repair: a sectional sleeve cured over that joint. A recording that shows open joints every four feet, the signature of a clay lateral laid in short lengths, is a relining, because sleeving each joint would cost more and leave the joints between them to fail next. A cast iron line channeled along its floor from the house to the street is also a relining. The count of defects in the written finding is what settles this question, and a proposal should show that count.

Whether the pipe still holds its shape

A liner copies the pipe it cures in. If that pipe is round and sloped, the liner is round and sloped. If the pipe has sagged into a belly, collapsed at a joint or been crushed flat, the liner would copy the defect, so the answer becomes replacement. Pipe bursting replaces the line along its own path between two small pits; a short dig replaces one collapsed section when the run is too crooked for bursting. The camera shows shape plainly: standing water after the camera passes marks a belly, and a lens that cannot pass marks a collapse.

What sits on top of it

This is the question that makes trenchless the default in Malibu. A lateral under open lawn can be dug up for the price of a day's labor. The same lateral under a slab, a driveway, a pool deck, a hillside retaining wall or the public sidewalk costs several times more to expose and restore than to rebuild from inside, and the work in the right-of-way adds a permit, traffic control and a paving patch. The finding should note what the pipe passes under, because that is what turns a method choice into a cost choice. sewer pipe repair in Malibu by TSR Trenchless, Inc. explains how these decisions are made for properties around Malibu.

Time, and what waiting costs

A defect found on camera does not get better by being left alone. An open clay joint admits more root each season, a channeled iron floor loses the rest of its wall, and a belly collects more sediment until it blocks. The cost of the repair, by contrast, is roughly the same whether it is done this month or next year, with one exception: a line that is still a lining candidate today can become a replacement once it loses its shape. The written finding should say which side of that line the pipe is on, so the owner can decide with the facts in hand.

The materials, briefly

Clay fails at the joints and is almost always relined or burst. Cast iron fails along the floor and is relined if the top of the pipe is intact, burst if it has fallen in. ABS plastic fails at glued joints and settled trenches; it is sleeved at a single break, relined if the breaks are several, and burst if a belly holds water. Orangeburg, the tar-paper pipe found in a few mid-century tracts, deforms rather than cracks and is nearly always a replacement. Knowing the material is the first thing the camera reports, and it narrows the options before a defect is even counted.

From finding to proposal

A proposal that follows this page will show the recording, the defect count with distances and depths, what the pipe passes under, the method chosen and the two it was chosen over, the material specification and rated life, the warranty, the permit plan and the crew. After the work comes the post-repair video. the process from first call to final video walks through that sequence step by step, and the independent cured-in-place reference is the reference for the terms the finding will use.

Questions we hear about sewer line repair & replacement

What are the signs a sewer pipe is failing, not just clogged?+

Repeated backups after cabling, gurgling at more than one fixture, a patch of lawn that stays green or wet, sewer odor in the yard, and slow drains throughout the house rather than at one sink. A clog is one fixture, once; a failing pipe is the whole house, repeatedly.

Does earthquake movement affect sewer pipes?+

Yes. Ground shaking opens clay joints and separates glued plastic joints, and laterals across the basin were damaged in past events without anyone noticing until roots or backups appeared years later. The camera finds those breaks; it does not matter when they happened.

Who pays if the break is under the street?+

In most Los Angeles County cities the property owner, because the lateral is theirs to the main. That is the strongest reason to repair from inside: the street is never opened, so there is no encroachment permit, traffic control or paving to pay for.

Can a repair be done in winter?+

Trenchless repairs are done year-round; the resin cure schedules adjust for temperature. Heavy rain can delay a job on a line that takes groundwater, since the liner needs a dry host, and the crew will reschedule around it rather than install into water.
